Antique 18th Century Italian Framed Embroidery Devotional Ex Voto

A sumptuous work of very fine embroidery on silk, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, "Maria De Bono Svccessv". It is Italian (purchased within a fine French collection) and dates between 1760-1790.

The embroidery work is typical of the period with long stitches forming very detailed flowers and vines. It is worked onto a beige silk background. The silk thread has faded to a pale beige with traces of the original hues of blue, pale green and yellow. Tiny gilt hand sewn paillettes (sequins) are interspersed throughout the entire design field. At the center is a large hand colored engraving (6 3/4" x 3 3/4") of the Virgin Mary in heaven with multitudes of cherubim at her feet and winged cherubim at north, south, east and west (loss to the details of the Infant Jesus).The engraving was hand painted with rich hues of blue and crimson red and highlighted with gilt accents to the folds of the red and blue robes. A metallic braid serves to frame the engraving. The entire work is sealed under a glass pane.

The simple wooden frame, painted black, is a later 19th century example. Plain paper (added at a later time in history) covers the back. The embroidered work measures: 11 1/4" x 8 1/2". The frame measures 9 1/2" x 13". The embroidered work is in good antique condition: darkening to fabric and fading to embroidery as mentioned above. The engraving holds the original detail well (except for the Infant Jesus); the rich pigments are still bright. The frame is solid with wear typical to age.
