Antique 19th Century French Convent Work Religious Chalice Veil

An elegant chalice veil, it's four panels are adorned by crosses made of roping gilt metallic braid. It is a convent example which originates from the Champagne region of France. During this period, within convents, the sisters often fashioned textiles from fine fabrics and trims donated by the local parishioners. (note, we picture the veil on a support which has a cross at the top in the standing pictures. (The veil itself is pictured in the reclining pictures...we sell the veil alone).
The four panels are made of creme colored silk. Cut in a teardrop shape, they each have a large central cross. The crosses are made of metallic gilt braid which has been hand sewn into a cross. Each cross has a hand sewn bezel setting which holds a large ruby faceted glass stone. Around the edges of the panels is a border of gilt metallic "frisee" bouillon. The top opening is lined with very fine gilt metallic roping.
Each panel measures: 8" x 4 1/2" including the bouillon trim. The crosses measure 4 1/4" tall. The veil is in very good condition: some darkening and spotting to the creme silk fabric. There are two tiny areas of fraying on two of the panels mid bottom.The crosses are intact as are the matching four bezel set stones.
The heavy use of gilt metallic braid is unusual. It is a beautiful example.
