Antique French Crucifix First Communion

A spectacular First Communion Crucifix, it originates from Paris, France and dates circa 1900. This genre of crucifix was given in the early 1900's, always made from mother of pearl and most often silver mounts. This one is unusual because of the elaborate and large gilded brass mounts.

The mother of pearl cross form reflects all colors of the rainbow. (Mother of Pearl is made from the inner lining of different mollusk shells, pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels and abalone). The mother of pearl cross form measures 2 5/8" x 1 1/2", 1/4" thick. The cross form is embellished with ornate and large cast gilded bronze mounting finials are at the end of each arm. The finial design consists of a lyre shape with fleur de lis at each open space within the design. They attach to the mother of pearl with gilded bronze caps, which are in the form of acanthus leaves with a central fleur de lis. The Christ figure is magnificent, with very delicate detailing to the skeletal and muscular form. His facial detailing is distinctly visible. There is a scroll above His head with the Christogram, INRI stems from the Latin phrase 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum' meaning 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. (This was the notice Pontius Pilate nailed over Jesus as he lay dying on the cross).

At the back you can see the tiny mounting pin ends from the Christ figure. There is a mounted ring at the top for threading a ribbon or chain. The total measurements are: 4 1/8" x 3" : the Christ figure 1 1/4" x 1". It is in very good antique condition: a couple of very fine, thin wafer chips to the mother of pearl at the top back right short arm (see photos). The mounts are solid with fantastically brilliant patina.

It is an impressive and exceptional antique crucifix.
