Antique Metallic Embroidery Religious Priest Stole
$695.00
The extreme length, over eight feet long (center point downward 4' 1" long on each side) is typical of a larger cathedral ceremony. Each side has a scrolling border of metallic gilt vines and metallic silver "stumpwork" leaves and fleur de lis. The large central medallion is worked in metallic gilt and silver stumpwork embroidery. This type of embroidery uses fine metallic wire, which is wound over a padded shape (i.e. flower, leaf). The result is a textural and sumptuous "jewel" appearance. The deep crimson velvet is "Lyon" silk from the wondrous factories of the period in Lyon (this type of velvet ceased production at the end of the 19th century.
The reverse side hand sewn silk lining is a replacement for worn or soiled original silk. The protective white cotton/lace neck adornment is antique as well but most likely not the original (the condition is unsoiled). This textile would have been cleaned and repaired by the nuns of a local convent. It is in very good condition.
It is unusual to find such a majestic, heavily embroidered cathedral stole.
