THIS ITEM HAS SOLD*** Antique Nineteenth Century Gilded Brass Framed French Sacred Heart Ex Voto Under Glass

**This item has sold.** A stunning Sacred Heart ex voto, it originates from the south of France and dates towards 1880.

This genre of ex voto reliquary was very popular during the late 19th century. It was fashioned to be placed in a home, either in a devotional corner or near the beside. The oval frame, metal backing and thick domed glass are trademarks of this type of reliquary.

This is a large piece, measuring 5 1/2" tall. It is a solid piece, with a fine brass frame. There is a metal (blackened metal) back and a highly domed glass window. Beneath the thick glass window ia a beautiful gold silk flaming Sacred Heart. There is a fabric applique (with gilt threads) "crowned M" at the center. Beneath the heart there is an applique of shimmering fabric rays (gilt threads). There are delicate white fabric lilies rising from the top of the flame. There is a beautiful frame fabric applique (gilt threads) of roses and vines. There is a large ring at the top for threading a ribbon or for use in hanging.

The voto measures: 5 1/2" tall (including hanging ring outstretched), 3 3/4" wide and 3/4" high (measuring to the center of the domed glass). It is in very good antique condition: the design is intact, colors of the fabrics still brilliant, the glass has no chips or cracks, the brass frame has some dimples and bends as it typical (it was hand placed onto the body of the voto). There is a 19th century bit of metallic braid threaded through the ring...we sell this with the voto as we found it with the voto.

It is a magnificent Sacred Heart ex voto!
