Antique Silver Religious Repousse Santos Crown

A resplendent antique silver crown, it dates circa 1880 and originates from Belgium. It bears a maker’s mark and silver sysmp (950) on the band.

The hand wrought repousse work has depth and detail. Scrolls, acanthus leaves, lilies, roses, arabasques are tightly interwoven to create a large diadem shape. This crown was made for a large Statue of the Virgin Mary, most likely a commissioned work for honoring a miracle or for thanksgiving. The band has three slots of adjustment with a little buckle to help hold the band in place.
the bottom band is formed with diamonds and circles, completing a full circle with it, never ending chain. The band has been pushed downward 3 1/4 inches in the front to make the crown fit better on the particular statue.

The crown is heavy and solid. It has been polished, but there are still bits of remaining tarnish. On the back of the face, you can see the raw and unpolished silver and details of the work, which gives the design such texture.

It measures 14 inches in circumference, 4 1/4 inches in diameter, 3 1/2 inches tall at the front center, tapering to one and a half inches tall at the sides. It is in solid and good condition.
