Glorious Antique French Silk Damask Ecclesiastic Priest Robe with Cope Hood
$895.00
Two shades and two patterns of purple silk damask have been used to create an impressive appearance from all sides. The ecclesiastic trim, both wide and narrow presents repeating purple crosses on a white (cotton) background. The cloak has a patch of hand sewn fortification (for worn or frayed areas) which is curious as it is done in a brown thread (use what was at hand) with very close and purposeful stitching (bottom center; we included a photo). This work (both the making of the vestment and the repair) was done by sisters or monks within a cloister or monastery close to the parish church.
The hood is impressive with the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) at the center (sun ray applique with hand sewn gilt sequins (some sequins missing. The central medallion (mounting onto the ray) presents the Agnu Dei applique of silver coils (all coils intact). The hand fashioned silver metal face and legs are placed above a metal and gilt metallic fabric altar (with the seven seals) and cross.
The lining is of two shades of purple both light and dark colored cotton. It measures 51" long with the "hood" measuring 15 1/2" wide. It is in very good condition in accordance to age: a few slight areas of fraying as is typical, missing sequins, old repairs mentioned above.
It is not often we find the entire garment intact as they are most often in separate pieces (cope hood, trim, metallic closures, fabric) in this modern market. It has so much wonderful history and represents the Lent season with spectacular beauty.
