Impressive DOUBLE FACE Antique French Regional Crucifix

A precious and magnificent work in filagree, it is a Regional Crucifix (French ladies wore them in the late 19th century and the region from which they came could be identified by the style of the crucifix)

The construction is delicate, with two figural depictions; Christ Crucifixion and the Madonna and Christ Child. It dates towards 1890 and originates from a fine collection found near Avignon, France.

The double face design, with intricate detailing was most likely custom ordered from a jeweler. It would have been worn by a very wealthy or noble person.

The silver filagree base presents leaves and fleur de lis flowers on both sides which fold onto each other, giving a thickness of 1/4 inch. The flat parts of the crosses are of brass, the outline roping, the filagree "thread" and embellishments are of French silver (.925). The figures (Christ Crucifixion and the Madonna and Christ Child) have lovely relief detailing. There are four ruby glass stones (faceted) which are set in the large fleur de lis at each point. The original chains as well as the top and bottom ornaments (the top also set with a ruby glass stone) still survive with the cross (these elements are often missing).

It measures: crucifix 3 3/4" x 3 1/2"; the entire piece including chain and ornament 7" x 3 3/4". It is in amazing condition; we have not polished it so most of the fine silver parts are tarnished black. It retains the original stones.

It is a substantial crucifix ornament; heavily detailed and and sturdy. It is a precious religious relic from a specific period in history.
