RARE Antique Bejeweled Gilded Brass Candleshade Ornament with Opaline Wafer

SOLD A rare, exceptional and unusual example, it is adorned with an opaline wafer at the center (to reflect a luminous and diffused light). It dates towards 1870 and originates from a Parisian collection.

With a fine jewelery bearing, it boasts nine floating stars which are each set with clear glass stones and a central cabochon of turquoise. The base tip is adorned with a small flower equally with clear paste stones and a turquoise cabochon center. The top has a large cross which is set with turquoise cabochon stones and a central pearl. The central white opaline wafer is set into a 1/4” gilded brass mount. This mount is surrounded by clear paste stones with an outer frame which has the appearance of a braided rope. There is a mount at the bottom which would fit into a small standing pedestal.

It measures 6 1/2 tall x 3 1/4 wide; the opaline wafer 3” x 1 1/2”. It is in excellent antique condition, the gilt is of a true gold hue.  

A glorious ornament with a regal bearing, it exemplifies spectacularly religious accessories of the church from the period of Napoleon III.
