Small Antique 19th Century French Wooden, Metal and Silver Pectoral Crucifix

The detailing to each part of this precious crucifix is striking. It originates from France and dates between 1890 and 1900.

The use of a fine overlay of wood as a background for the elements of the crucifixion gives added definition. The cross is of a combination of hard metals and the Christ figure has been silvered. The suffering figure of Christ is expertly rendered. At his feet (conquer over death) is a scull and crossbones at His feet, a "rayonnant" crown behind His head and a banner at the top which reads, "INRI", (INRI stems from the Latin phrase 'Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum' meaning 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews'. This was the notice Pontius Pilate nailed over Jesus as he lay dying on the cross). There is a ring attached at the top for threading a chain or ribbon. On the reverse side you can see the attachment pins for the figures on the front.

It measures:2 5/8" x 1 1/8". It is in very good antique condition; there is some light tarnish to the silver of the Christ figure.

It is a beautiful example of a French pectoral crucifix.
