**This item has sold.** Each side of this spectacular chasuble is rich with spectacular applied medallions. It originates from the Champagne region of France and dates towards 1900. This example originates from a very large collection which was acquired during over 40 years (antique ecclesiastic dealer). It contained some of the most exquisite and unusual chasuble examples that we have ever seen on the market. Each chasuble in her collection was carefully cleaned and repaired by a nearby convent, rendering each precious example to it's best condition.

The front panel has an exquisite embroidered appliqued silk and metallic thread work. Four beautiful angels adore the Cross; two hold the metal work cross, with downcast eyes and soft facial expressions. Two angels blow horns, spreading the news of the arisen Savior. Their wings are breathtaking, with many, many tiny stitches producing an ethereal appearance. The details of the faces and hands are hand embroidered onto silk, The background is a very luscious deep purple velvet (from Lyon). It is bordered by an ecclesiastic (later addition) trim.

The back panel has an impressive metalwork applique design of the sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary. The work is done in both gilt and silver; a silver cross rises from the heart (bearing the crown of thorns) of Jesus; a silver sword pierces the heart of Mary and a silver lily flower rises above. Each heart has red embroidered wounds and drops of blood. Shimmering rays formed from many paillettes (sequins). The background is of purple velvet with ecclesiastic bordering trim (later addition). The back of each side (re-backed) is of gold cotton.

It is in very good condition; slight lifting of the medallions in a few tiny places which can be resewn. It measures: 44" long; the double heart medallion 10" x 12": the angels 18" across by 11" tall. The vestment is very heavy! Please do look at the pictures closely, the stitch detailing is just incredible. We are happy to furnish additional photos.

It is a precious ecclesiastic vestment.
