**This item has sold.** A gorgeous example from the period of Napoleon III, it dates towards 1860. It originates from a large religious textile collection in Paris.
The face of the stole is of a fine cotton which is interwoven with gilt threads. This serves as a shimmering background for beautifully applied metallic stumpwork appliques. There is a winding branch which supports flowers and leaves scrolling along the outer edges of the stole. Executed in stumpwork (padding underneath the embroidery which makes it rise up from the background), the flowers and leaves seem to float along the scrolling branches. Each wide bottom panel has a large stumpwork Maltese cross . There is a 1/2" wide metallic brocade trim along the edge of the stole. Bouillon trim (2 1/2" long) ornaments the bottom edges. The stole is backed in red cotton (some small replacement panels). There is a fine woven gilt metallic central horizontal braid with two exquisite gilt metallic tassels. Each tassel has thin silver metal sheets shimmering through the woven gilt on the second globe form in the center above the bouillon.
It measures: 87" long (not including the bottom bouillon). It is in very good antique condition: light soiling to red backing, design intact, embroidery in good order; some bouillon fringe missing on bottom panels. Please study pictures as they are the best description.
Religious vestments of this period are breathtaking. The fine fabrics and "over the top" embroidery are found specifically during this period. This is a fine example from a lavish period in religious textiles.
