Antique c.1840 Italian Paperolle Reliquary

This is a large and very fine reliquary, measuring 6 x 5 1/2", which originates from Parma Italy.

The central medallion depicts an Italian Saint with crossed arms (the submission of the crucified Christ). There is a monstrance floating on a cloud to his right and an Italian church on his left. There is an oval frame surrounding the medallion made of pressed and glued strips of gilded paper.

The face of the Saint is very benevolent and and serene. The facial details are perfect. His hands are beautifully done. The colors are soft (gouache) in the background, giving a lovely perspective behind the Saint.

Four pillars made of gilt, white and red paper serve as supports for the "temple" roof, which is entirely made of gilt paperolles. The design appears 1/2" thick. The base of the temple houses many Saints names, which are written on paper scrolls. The paperolle work is that of an expert; tightly coiled and shaped into circles and teardrops.

The entire design is sandwiched between a hand cut piece of glass and a fine brass backing plate. It is secured by a brass side panel. The upper fold over edge has a repeating circle and dash design which reflects the light.

It is in very good condition: some of the Saint's names have fallen away from their original position; the overall design is intact; the central painting retains original colors and design. The frame is sturdy and the glass shows no chips or cracks.
