Antique Ecclesiastic Priest Stole

An exquisite religious stole in gold damask silk, it originates from France and dates towards 1870 (face) and the late 18th century (silk fabric on the backing).

The fabric is beautiful, with salmon and pale peach colored flowers accented with sage green. There is an overlay print of dark gold flowers on the fabric field with gilt thread shading. Brilliant damask silver metallic braid outlines all edges and forms a cross shape at the top conjunction center. There is wide (2") silver metallic braid at the bottom edges.

There is a linen layer between the top and bottom fabrics (seen in the upper top where the old silk has worn away. The 18th century (1790) creme colored silk has a moire "water" pattern of pink and purple flowers (repeating).

It measures: Each half: 18" long and 7 1/2" wide; total measurement around outer edge when worn is 36". It is in good antique condition; the front silk damask remains brilliant with little wear and no fading. The silk backing has frayed at the edges and completely worn away at the top neck. There is one silver metallic braid connecting piece that is hanging on by one thread (needs to be reinforced).

It is a beautifully decorative piece; it's shorter length make it more versatile than the longer counterparts.
