Antique French Regional Amethyst Crucifix

Set with brilliant amethyst stones against a silver filagree frame, it still retains the original filigree bail. It originates from the Normandy region of France and dates circa 1880.

The shape is very typical of a regional cross of the era. The filagrees form flower-like ends to the crucifix arms. Each one is set with two light amethyst faceted stones. There are tiny silver half globes set on the top of the fine filagree curves, creating a shimmering spark when the light hits them. The center is set with a large dark amethyst stone (it is beautiful). The bail follows the design of the cross ends, and is set with one central dark amethyst stone. The back is shows the delicate filagree work.

It measures: 2 1/2" x 1 3/4" (including the bail). The large center stone measures 1/4" in diameter. It is in very good antique condition: we have not polished it, retaining the original patina that comes with age. The center amethyst stone has a very slight indentation at the center with a very light scratch. All stones are present. There is no silver hallmark as is typical with these pieces.

It unusual to find the bail still attached to these crucifix. It is a striking example from a period of history when the regional crucifix was a "right of passage" for a young lady, and it was treasured throughout her lifetime.
