Antique French Regional Provencal Crucifix

An exquisite crucifix, it is set with fifteen small, faceted rose glass stones and one large central rose glass stone. It originates from the south of France (near Marseille) and dates towards 1890.

This type of crucifix was worn in the latter half of the 19th century by young ladies residing in the country regions of France. Each region had a specific design of crucifix which you could identify with a particular location. They were worn with a ribbon which would match a dress, which was tied in a bow at the back of the neck.

This crucifix has a simple shape with four end caps which fan out in a triangular "flower". The arms are of silver with a scalloped edging. The back of the crucifix shows the construction. The front has bezel set glass stones (faceted). There is a gold bail at the top to accommodate a rather wide ribbon.

It measures: 3" (including the bail) x 1 3/4". It is in very good antique condition: all stones are present, we have not polished it, the stones retain their brilliant rose hue and are well set in the frame.

It is a beautiful example of the Provencal shape with unusual rose colored glass stones.
