Antique French Religious Christ Child Robe

An exquisite religious textile, it would have graced a Christ Child Santos within a small French Catholic parish. It originates from the Champagne region of France and dates circa 1860.

The robe is hand stitched (convent work) from beautiful moire silk (you can see the "water" pattern in the photos). It has a lining of fine beige linen. The sleeves are adorned hand worked bobbin lace (extremely fine). The bottom border has a wide fringe of gilt metallic coils.

The Christogram is surrounded by a festoon of flowers and leaves. This entire design is worked in metallic stumpwork, which used padding underneath, creating a raised effect. Each motif was realized by the wrapping of silver metallic wire around the padded pieces. The roses are especially textural and life like. The metallic thread is silver, which has darkened with age and exposure to light and smoky environment of the church. Each motif has a hand sewn border in gilt metallic coiling thread.

It measures: 13" long, 17" wide at the bottom, the Christogram 7" x 5". The condition is amazing....some fraying to the silk as is typical, spots and staining as is expected. The Christogram is original and intact as are all elements of the embellishments.

It is a precious ecclesiastic textile, marvelously preserved.
