Antique French Religious Ecclesiastic Convent Work Textile Banner

A beautiful convent work textile, it combines silk embroidery with very fine metallic embroidery to produce a rich and commanding appearance. It originates from the Champagne region of France and dates towards 1890.

The background front panel is of crimson red silk. The back panel is of gold cotton/silk. There is a 1/2" gilt metallic braid around the front edges. The central needlework panel is hand sewn onto the silk. It is worked with beautiful linen/silk stitching in luscious shades of blue, rose, salmon, crimson, forest green, ochre, gold and mustard. A chain of flowers and buds cascades top to bottom. Interspersed are four medallions which each hold a gilt metallic design. At the top is reads, " Castitas" at the bottom "Pavperta" The metallic embroidery is worked in long threads which are secured by tiny hand stitching.

It measures: 39" x 8 3/4". The medallions measure 3 3/4" x 3 1/2". It is in very good condition with little wear; the colors of the silk and hand worked embroidery remain brilliant. There is some light spotting on the back panel.

It is an exquisite textile, with exceptional stitching.
