Antique French Religious Paroissien Cathedral Binding

A rare binding , with a blind stamped cathedral window on the coverboards, it holds the Quasimodo Paroissien (This formal extension or anticlimax of Easter Week). The binding style is specific to France from 1820-1850.

The binding is of fine cerise Morocco leather. The central window was achieved with a custom hand tooled metal plaque, which when heated, would emboss the hand tooled design into the leather. The edges have a hand applied gilt tooled border with arabesques at the corners. The spine has a large hand applied gilt medallion with morning glory flowers. The title plate is tooled in gilt.

There is a chart of festivals and times from 1829-1849 after the frontispiece. The French and Latin text includes " Litanies Du Sacre Coeur de Jesus, Saint Sacrement, Psaumes , Dedicace Des Eglises and "La Fete Du Sacre Coeur de Jesus".

The interior papers are deep navy blue. The page edges are gilded. It measures 6 3/4" x 3 3/4", 1 1/2" thick. It is in good antique condition; light scratching to bottom of front coverboard, light wear to board edges.
