Extraordinary Antique Ecclesiastic Double Face Priest Stole

A richly opulent appearance is achieved by using velvet, violet and creme silk damask, handworked silk embroidery, braided gilt metallic braid, “ woven” gilt metallic braid, gilt metallic roping and tassels. Each panel section is hand worked, including the incredibly detailed religious motifs. It is French and dates towards 1790.

The violet side would have been worn during Lent and the creme/white for celebrations linked to Christ ( except for Christmas and Easter). Each side has identical adornment. Beginning at the bottom, the two fish and anchor represents God and faith; the fish are an ancient secret symbol of Jesus Christ, God’s Son and our Savior.

The next large blocks hold the Catholic Pax symbol (Pax Vobiscum), Peace be with you. There is a hand embroidered Maltese cross at the center top, each side. It measures:56” long, 2 3/4” wide. It is in exceptional condition.
