Fine Antique English Silver Heart Flacon

This is an English Flacon, with the silversmith stamp of WC William Cunningham. It originates from the Cotswold region and dates circa 1860. It would have been used for scent or Holy Water.

A winged, finely detailed cherub rests atop the center face. Surrounding him is a festoon wreath of lilies and leaves. There is a bevel (1/16") around the outer edge of the face. The back remains unadorned. At the bottom edge of the bevel (seen from the back, there is a 1/4" bend which came from the heart being dropped at one point in time.

The lid opens with a fine hinge, with an "S" clasp. The original glass stopper remains. There are two silver hallmarks on the top rim of the opening. Along the back left edge are three hallmarks, "W.C.", Lion Passant (Birmingham make, sterling guarantee), and a blank heraldic shield. There are three hallmarks in the lid; "F", "C", and Lion Passant.

The lid opens and closes properly. The heart is very heavy and solid. We have not polished it; it can be polished to a higher patina. It measures: 3 1/8" x 2 1/4". It is in good antique condition in consideration of age: The lid has two indentations along the top edge, there is an indentation as mentioned above on the bottom bevel edge.
