Gilt Illuminated Christogram Antique Ecclesiastic Tabernacle Veil

An impressive veil, it would have been hung over the facade of an altar Tabernacle ( which held the Chalice ). The cotton/silk fabric is enriched by hundreds of interwoven thin gilt metallic threads which imparts a glowing countenance. It originates from France (Burgundy) and dates toward 1880.

It was custom made for a particular tabernacle and this veil has two extensions on either side. There is a scalloped valance which holds the central Christogram, IHS. The inital letters are in stumpwork (gilt metallic threads hand wrapped around cotton padding and paper board). The letters have hand stitched outlines in crimson silk thread. There is a sunburst beneath consisting of metallic gilt coil braid and hand sewn gilt paillettes.

Twisted gilt metallic bullion fringe adorns the horizontal edges. Half inch ecclesiastic gilt metallic scalloped braid serves as the remaining edge adornment. The backing is of red silk. Large hand sewn hooks run across the top. It measures: 39 1/2”across, the two panels 24” long. The scalloped valance is 7” long at the center.

It is in exceptional condition for the age: some smudge marks from candle/ inscence smoke, wear to silk along the to edge as is expected with age and use.

**Please note that the metallic infused fabric reflects differently on different angles, changing the color. The color is a rich yellow gold.
