It is an unusual depiction of the Crucifixion, with carved houses beneath the feet of Christ.
The door is of solid wood with a slightly concave to the face. The curved surface gives extra importance to the hand carved Cross and Christ. Traces of red paint remain at the top of the Cross. The facial features of Christ are still visible, portrayed in the beautiful simplicity of 17th century work. The hand work of the entire Christ figure is exquisite. Traces of plaster and gilding still cling to the wooden carving. A swirling gilded cloud rises behind the Cross. The original lock plate is still attached (the lock has been removed). There is one small portion of an iron hinge at the bottom right. There are traces of red fabric underneath the nails on the back of the door. The outer edges of the door have two bevels which frame the curved edge of the door.
The door measures: 13 1/4" high, 7 1/4" wide and 1 1/4" thick: the Christ figure measures 5 1/2" x 4 1/2", 3/4" in depth. It is in amazing antique condition for an age of over 300 years. There is flaking and missing bits of plaster and gilt which is typical with age and temperature changes. The gilt has worn down to original wood or plaster in places. The door is solid and the carved details still recognizable.
It is a precious relic from the south of France with a rare detailed illustration of the Crucifixion.
