Seventeenth Century Italian Ecclesiastical Silk Velvet Panel

Dating from the very late sixteenth century (c.1690-1700) the panel depicts St. Mark in the central medallion in silk and metallic embroidery. The lion, symbol for Saint Mar, is just next to his left elbow.

The field surrounding is worked In fine silk crimson velvet. Arabesques and scrolls and two large lilies are worked in very tight gilt metallic threads (stumpwork; padded underneath).
The medallion border measures one half inch and is worked in basketweave stitch with metallic gilt coils.

The wide outer border (1 3/8") has an interesting raised "eye of God" pattern (stumpwork with coils underneath the gilt metallic threads). The linen backing bears witness to the elaborate
hand sewn work (convent work).

It measures 22" x 11". The central panel 5" in diameter. It is in amazing condition for the age; wear to velvet as is typical with age, missing bits of embroidery stitching on the medallion.
