This item is SOLD *** This is a precious example, bearing the coat of arms of the French King, Louis XV of France. The purpose of an armorial Semaine Sainte was either to rest in the Royal Chapel or to be given as a gift to a visiting noble or dignitary.It was published in Paris in 1748 and has provenance from a private Semaine Sainte armorial binding collection in Paris.
Louis XV (15 February 1710 – 10 May 1774), known as Louis the Beloved (French: le Bien-Aimé), was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774.
The Holy Week offices (liturgies) lead worshipers through the events of the final days before Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. This volume gathers the prayers and biblical readings appointed for the entire week, including Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. It is translated by Monsieur l'Abbe de Bellegarde and conforms to the Breviares and Roman Missels. The text is presented in parallel columns of French and Latin. There are four full page engravings (Jesus entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Ascension to Heaven) and one double engraving (the King and Queen praying with heaven above them and the Lamb of God, Agnus Dei). There are five headpiece vignette engravings.
The binding is of the finest red Morocco leather (the most expensive color of binding leather). It has gilt tooled fleur de lis borders on the front and back boards. The royal coat of arms of King Louis XV is at the center. The spine is ornamented by five compartments which are filled by gilt tooled fleur de lis. The page edges of the binding are gilt tipped. The endpapers are of fine marbled paper of the period.
It measures: 7 3/4" x 4 3/4" x 2" thick. It is in good antique condition: some light wear to binding faces typical of age and use. A small separation to the top joint of the back board and spine. Wear to the gilt of the armorial crests typical with age and use.
This is a magnificent French prayer book with important provenance to the king Louis XV.
