A magnificent example, it is adorned with a champleve rosette medallion depicting the Paschal Lamb. It originates from France and dates towards 1880. It survives with it's own custom made velvet cushion.
It is heavy, made of solid bronze. The cast work is very intricate with cut work panels on all four sides. Each corner is pronounced with rounded columns protruding outward 2" from the flat panels. Each column rests on a support which is in a triangular shape with a lion's paw foot. Each corner is embellished with an enamel medallion (white Maltese cross on a field of Royal Blue). The two side panels repeat this same medallion. The back panel as a gilded bronze rosette at the center. There are twelve (a number with much religious symbolism) cabochon glass stones (red and green).
There is a flat brass panel on the top of the frame. The original handmade crimson velvet cushion (hand sewn with a red fabric backing) fits to measure atop the panel. It measures: 12" x 12" corner to corner edge; at the flat points, 10" x 10". It is 5" tall. The Paschal medallion measures 2" x 2". It is in very good antique condition: The stones are all present. The form is solid. The cushion has wear to the edges and top in accordance with age and use. The champleve enamel medallions all present.
It is an impressive object of nineteenth century Ecclesiastic ornamentation which served dutifully in a Catholic parish.
