***THIS ITEM HAS SOLD***

This is a glorious example which would have served in a parish church. It originates from the south of France and dates circa 1890. The flat back sacred heart ex voto is not often found.

While an engraved initial is most often found, this sacred heart is ornamented with an exquisite, double "M" (Marie) initial. This gives a very textural countenance. The brass initials were cast in a metal mold and are attached through the top with small brads. The lines of the "MM" are delicate with small (symbolic) teardrops along the middle and edges. There is a crown of roses (The rose is sometimes used to represent heavenly joy when worn as a crown by saints, while its thorns often point to Original Sin. The Blessed Virgin Mary is called the “rose without thorns.”).

The curved supporting heart shape opens by a thumb latch to the left. A hinge opens the "door" to reveal the flat back (a small pocket forming between the two sides). There is a deeply grooved flame rising from the top. At the back of the flame is a long bar which would have been used for attachment to a statue or altar panel. The back heart shape is flat and smooth.

It measures: 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" and is 1" thick. It is in very good antique condition; slight tarnishing in accordance with age and use.

It is a precious religious adornment.
