This item has SOLD Antique 19th Century Gilded Brass French Reliquary Box Pendentif

***THIS ITEM HAS SOLD***A sumptuous example in gilded brass, it is encrusted with 35 clear and colored glass stones. It originates from Paris and dates between 1880-1890. This genre of reliquary box served to hold very tiny relics. The small size gave ease for it to be carried or used in a private devotional corner.

The outer "floating" frame is of cast brass. There are four double arabesques which form a rosette encircling the central window. At the center of each arabesque are three ruby glass stones. Three of the arabesques are crowned with a single blue stone (one stone missing above the fourth). Between each arabesque are double fleur de lis which are crowned with three bezel set green glass stones. Surrounding the window is a 1/4" channel set with 23 clear glass stones. The glass window (a glass wafer) is framed by a 1/16" wide brass oval.

The back of the box reveals the depth of the box, 3/8". There is a fragment of red silk which has been oval cut which is seen underneath the glass. The entire size is: 3 1/4" x 3". The front of the box (window) measures 1 5/8" x 1". There is a small ring mounted at the back for threading a chain or hook. It is in very good antique condition, no cracks to glass, patina brilliant; one missing blue stone.

The large number of clear stones surrounding the central oval add an additional regal appearance. It is a very fine example.
