A rare solid bronze example, it bears the sacred, pierced heart of Mary as well as the Sacred Heart of Jesus which bears the crown of thorns. It originates from the Champagne region of France and dates circa 1880.

It is a solid and heavy cast object which would have resided on an altar panel or statue base. Many "layers" of rays extend outward behind the double hearts. The rays have varied lengths which give a rich appearance. The hearts are painted with a rich crimson hue, which is placed over the top of a layer of white gesso. The flames are deeply curved. The heart of Jesus has a large bronze cross rising from the center and the one of Mary has a bronze sword piercing the right side.

There is a bronze mount loop at the top center and there are four circular mount receptacles which would have received a wire for attaching to a larger panel. It measures: 3 1/2" tall and 4" wide. The hearts measure 2 1/4" x 2 1/2". It is in very good antique condition; some light wear to red paint (you can see the white gesso) to the crown of thorns and the flames on the right heart.

It is a magnificent ex voto with a striking representation of the double sacred heart.
